KENDALL SQUARE INITIATIVE

Create a vibrant MIXED-USE environment for people to live, work, learn and play. EVOLUTION MIT

Thank you for visiting the Kendall Square Initiative website. We appreciate the opportunity to update you on our progress. In April 2011, MIT filed a rezoning petition for 26 acres of our property in Kendall Square which generated significant interest from stakeholders. Our petition expired in the middle of the discussion, and we were happy to have the opportunity to continue the conversation over the past year.

Those who love Kendall Square have an historic opportunity to revitalize it by creating and investing in new lab and science initiatives, housing, public open spaces, and vibrant retail spaces. The intensive dialogue that the Kendall stakeholders have engaged in has been instructive and productive. Active engagement by neighborhood groups, the MIT community, Cambridge City Council, Community Development Department, Cambridge Historic Commission, MIT academic planners and others has resulted in a clearer vision for Kendall Square and an evolution in MIT's proposal that is significantly better.

What was once primarily a lab and science based initiative has evolved... into a more balanced mixed-use revitalization project. We have identified One Broadway as a major housing site, focused our attention on improving the recreational and retail environment at Broad Canal and Main Street, evaluated opportunities for fostering innovation through living and working opportunities, enhanced connections to the water and developed concrete proposals for contributing physically and financially to the transformation of the public realm.

On May 1, 2012, MIT updated the Cambridge Planning Board on the evolution in our thinking as well as context for our next rezoning petition. We anticipate filing our rezoning language and presenting the details of our new plan to stakeholders later in May. We are excited about our proposal and encourage you to check this website for information in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please access the link to our Planning Board presentation. We welcome your feedback at kendallsquare@mit.edu.
